I can relate to getting stuck in the bottom left quadrant as a kid.
The game theory stuff reminds me of a Hofstadter essay (reprinted in Metamagical Themas) about superrationality, called "Dilemmas for Superrational Thinkers, Leading Up to a Luring Lottery". It describes a similarly entertaining game that was actually played (via letters sent in to Scientific American). It somewhat reminds me of Beginning of Infinity or some of the old Google-esque inductive logic riddles (do you remember the old Twin Riddle that we did in the D&D campaign ;p)
